A monument to green guru Joe Polaischer of Matakana has opened in his native Austria.
Joe, from Matakana’s Rainbow Valley Farm, was a well known permaculturist and environmentalist who died in February 2008.
He had lectured extensively in Europe on permaculture where he was affectionally known as the “eco-pope”.
Appropriately, his monument is a memorial park planted with heritage fruit trees, each chosen and planted by one of Joe’s childhood friends, and will be open for anyone in the community to harvest the fruit.
